Donovan Mitchell - Superb Separation

Donovan Mitchell. 2018 Dunk Contest Champ. Mitchell led all rookies in scoring with 20.5 points per game (and 24.4 points per game in the playoffs), 3 pointers made (187, Kyle Kuzma finished second with 159), free throws made (239-297, ahead of Jayson Tatum’s 213-258), and third in steals (1.49, behind Ben Simmons’ 1.73 and Lonzo Ball’s 1.69). He was also the first rookie to score 40 in a game since Blake Griffin in 2011. The man they called “the Spida” also surpassed Karl Malone’s record of number of 20+ point games for Jazz rookies. When Donovan went off against the Phoenix Suns, he became the first rookie guard to score two 40 points games since Allen Iverson did back in 1996-97. He also had a little something to say against Russell Westbrook, the REIGNING MOST VALUABLE PLAYER in the league, when he led Utah’s toppling of the Thunder in six. Mitchell’s magnificent 38 points in game 6 falls behind only Wilt Chamberlain, Lew Alcindor, and Magic Johnson in terms of points by rook in a series clincher.

Mitchell is magical. His moves have moves. His stepover, his sidestep, the stepthrough, the stutter, the drag dribble, the hesi, the smitty, the pivot into pump fake into rev pivot; Mitchell’s got myriad moves and he reels them off one after another in an almost abusive manner. He’s a scintillating scorer who can create, catch and shoot, go around, run through, or rise ABOVE his defender. His footwork is PHENOMENAL and obviously that’s in no small part thanks to his tireless work ethic. If you don’t already follow Chris Brickley on Instagram, you should. He’s one of the league’s most sought after trainers, and he has volumes to speak about Donovan Mitchell and how hard he works. Add all that to the fact that he fell into the lap of the REMARKABLE Quin Snyder, and you have the recipe for a superstar. His (true) rookie campaign was nothing short of sensational. He not only dueled the defensive dynamo Paul George in round 1, he went toe to toe with two Hall-of-Fame guards in James Harden (the likely MVP this year) and Chris Paul the following round.

4:27 is definitely my favorite moment. It has EVERYTHING. The picture perfect jab over before the drive, and he gets a little MJ-esque with the kickout/leaning tomahawk. That and everything else looks like the next gen DWade? Goodness gracious, this young fella is gonna be a PROBLEM.

No. None of his playoff highlights are here, and there are gonna be quite a few videos on Mitchell (including his playoff scoring, and a video about his finishing), so this isn't all there is going to be.
