The Garden of Proserpine - A Poem (Algernon Charles Swineburne)

This 1866 poem by AC Swineburne is about the Greek goddess Persephone (also called Proserpine), who was taken by Hades to live in the underworld. It later came to be that she lived there for half the year and on Earth for the other half. The poem deals with religion, life and death.

It's been used in the book and TV series "A Series of Unfortunate Events", both having its first line adapted to the codephrase "The world is quiet here" and being quoted directly. It's also appeared in a number of films, books and series, as well as RV Williams' orchestral work.
