BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby Final 2016

It had been predicted in advance that the break would be decisive in the 2016 Boylesports Irish Derby final and so it proved and Rural Hawaii was a strong favourite after just a couple of yards.

He eventually raced home a very deserving winner of the €125,000 prize for owners Helen and Mike O’Dwyer and a first Derby winner for trainer Graham Holland.

Rural Hawaii went to traps the second favourite with kennel companion Sonic very solid at evens favourite. But Sonic, for once, missed the kick and Rural Hawaii came away flying and he raced to the bend a few lengths up on the two bitches Holycross Leah and Sidarian Pearl.

Sidarian Pearl got bumped on the bend and Rural Hawaii was a clear leader into the back from Holycross Leah. The latter closed rapidly down the far side but Rural Hawaii still had a few lengths in hand around the bottom. Meanwhile Sonic had made up big ground and was a challenging third around the bottom.

Here Rural Hawaii did his usual very wide path and Holycross Leah suddenly had a major chance in second. But Rural Hawaii is very strong and he galloped on to win by a length from Holycross Leahin 29.65 with Sonic another length adrift in third.

The winner was a thoroughly deserving winner and only lost one race through the entire Derby. A son of Head Bound and Duck Fat, he was bred by the owners Helen and Mike O’Dwyer in Clonmel and was a first Derby winner for Graham Holland.

The O’Dwyer clan joined the Holland team on the podium for the presentation and what a night it was for joint owner Mike O’Dwyer who had made the journey from Maui in Hawaii to enjoy the experience. What a trip it has been for him and his wife Tiara.
