Talk Description: There is so much excitement and optimism surrounding AI but this was not the case a decade or so ago. In fact, techno-product makers avoided the term for fear of being branded wide-eyed dreamers akin to snake-oil salesmen. Now seen in a positive light, AI is enjoying frenzied attention from the public. This was not the case even thirty years ago. What changed?

In this talk we will give an update of the contents of the paper published in Computational Intelligence (Springer 2021) with the same title and trace from the past, down to the present uncovering what led to this present day preoccupation of the public to things AI. Along the way, we will also ask, is this the AI conceived by the originators of AI?

Speaker Bio: Dr Lito Perez Cruz is the principal management scientist for his company, Sleekersoft which consults in analytics and data science. He has worked in the past for the IT industry spanning 30 years of experience in software engineering. He jas also taught in universities like Monash University in the field of computer and data science. His doctoral work was in the field of computational logic where he developed a mathematical framework for reconciling heterogeneous ontologies for the semantic web.
