5 Things You Did Not Know About Arizona State University

(INTRO): Arizona State University otherwise known as ASU is a large university in Arizona with an old reputation of being known as “The Party School”. In this video, I will be informing you of some of the most interesting things you probably did not know about the University.

Starting off with number 1:

1. There are 4 ASU campuses with ASU Tempe being the main one.
In Tempe, there are many free fun events like the Inferno Fest concert hosted in the fall previously featuring bands like The All American Rejects in 2017 and Foster the People in 2018, the Devil Palooza concert hosted in the spring also featured artists in previous years like T-Pain in 2018 and Rae Sremmurd in 2017. There are also free sun devil Football games for enrolled students.

2. ASU is #1 in Innovation Many do not know that ASU was ranked the most innovative school in the nation, ahead of schools like MIT and Stanford. In fact, right now ASU is building a smart city called the innovation corridor, this is supposed to feature autonomous driving friendly streets and new integrated living spaces for residents.

3. ASU is one of the biggest universities in the US with over 100,000 students ASU ranks as one of the largest universities by student population, in fact in 2016 ASU ranked number 6 in the nation in terms of the student population. In 2019 the incoming class of freshman alone this year account for over 12,000 students.

4. The mascot, Sparky, was designed by former Disney artist, Berkeley “Berk” Anthony. Anthony worked at the Disney Studio from 1935 until he was drafted for World War II in 1941. Some people have speculated that Sparky looks somewhat like Walt Disney, but Anthony never confirmed it.

5. The final presidential debate for the 2004 election between John Kerry and George W. Bush was hosted in the Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium on the Tempe campus. In fact, many presidents actually spoke at ASU including former president Barack Obama in 2009 in the Sun Devil Stadium and Theodore Roosevelt for the Dedication of Roosevelt Dam in 1911 right here in front of the Old Main building.
