Which German Troops Were Actually Issued the STG44?

The STG44 was the world's first assault rifle. Most German soldiers never touched one.

Of roughly 426,000 built — in an army of millions — distribution was strictly prioritized.

Waffen-SS divisions got them first. Leibstandarte, Das Reich — Germany's premier frontline formations where automatic fire at rifle range made the most immediate difference.

Eastern Front infantry came next. Specifically divisions holding lines against Soviet human wave assaults where sustained automatic fire was genuinely decisive.

Fallschirmjäger and elite Panzergrenadier units received allocations as supplies allowed.
Regular Wehrmacht infantry — the vast majority of Germany's army — waited. Many never received one at all, continuing with the bolt-action Kar98k until the war ended.

Germany invented the assault rifle in 1943.
Then couldn't build enough to arm the soldiers who needed it before it was already too late.
