Unsafe & targeted in a country we once called our own : Afghan Sikhs seeking shelter in India

#SikhismInAfghanistan #Afghanistan
Afghanistan's small Sikh community has lived in that country since Guru Nanak laid the foundation of the first gurudwara there in the 15th century. They stayed through the centuries. Despite Partition in 1947, when thousands of Sikhs in neighbouring Pakistan moved to India and through recent decades when they were targeted by the Taliban and other terror groups. But a terror attack in the Kabul gurdwara in March this year convinced the Sikhs that it was now time to leave. Two batches of refugees have since arrived in Delhi and a third is expected soon. But there is also an older batch of immigrants, who came to India after the 2018 attack in Jalalabad -- they now want to leave India, but cannot go back to Kabul.

ThePrint's Reporter Urjita Bhardwaj & photographer Manisha Mondal spoke to several Sikhs recently arrived from Afghanistan as well as those who had come earlier to bring you this story of loss and betrayal and the constant question of the refugee : Where is home?
