Project EDWARD alcohol interlocks discussion ETSC 22 05 26
Alcohol interlocks first emerged in the 1960s as performance‑based devices, and since then they have evolved into sophisticated breath‑alcohol systems, now embedded in legislation and rehabilitation programmes across many countries. In recent years, EU initiatives such as the General Safety Regulation and national schemes for offenders and professional drivers have helped bring alcohol interlocks into the mainstream of road safety policy. We're delighted that our guides this morning are two people at the heart of that work. Antonio Avenoso is Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council, which he joined in 2001 and has led since 2008. He oversees a wide portfolio of international research networks and road safety programmes, including ETSC’s landmark Safe and Sober initiative. Alongside him is his ETSC colleague Francesca Podda, a highly experienced project manager who has led alcohol interlock activities within Safe and Sober, national events across Europe, and the development of ETSC’s alcohol interlock barometer and map. Between them, Antonio and Francesca work with more than 200 experts and 61 member organisations to promote evidence‑based measures for tackling drink driving across Europe.
