Archspire - Drone Corpse Aviator cover

An attempt at Archspire's Drone Corpse Aviator, done in one take to the best of my ability. Note that I didn't tab/learn the song in just two hours: I had a head start, explained below. My guitar is panned slightly to the left throughout. Tabs and more details below - enjoy!

- Transcription/backstory/how this was done so fast

I was the one who made the Golden Mouth + Bleed the Future transcriptions you may have seen on Ultimate Guitar if you're into that sort of thing (my username there is Aays). I never got around to covering either of those tracks, though it's made me very happy whenever I've heard that people have used my tabs to try and learn the songs.

I've spent most of September in Vancouver, far from home — and it was here that last week, I had the good fortune to be slotted to review Bleed the Future for Heavy Blog is Heavy. The review should be up soon, but just know the album is phenomenal and that if you're an Archspire fan you'll absolutely love it.

While listening to the album for review, I also started transcribing a few of my favourite parts just for myself because it's something I enjoy doing to train my ear and to improve as a guitarist and musician. But I also remembered that when I fly back home at the end of this week, my 7 string won't be coming home with me. So as soon as Drone Corpse Aviator was announced as the single on Sept 28, I immediately polished up whatever I'd worked out and got to learning it best I could — since this was the only chance I had to do the song! It took ~4-5 hours to transcribe total, and this video was recorded on the afternoon of the 28th. I bid farewell to my 7 early tomorrow morning :(

- Notes on the take itself

I'd have really liked to practice a lot more to get this song down 100%, but this is as close as I'll be able to get it in the little time I have. Some parts are slightly off (e.g. my brain turned off briefly at 1:29, plus the lick at 0:28 in the video was played a scale degree higher than it should be - I've corrected it in the tab) but this was the best I could do. This guitar also has a very uncooperative pickup switch that's missing its cap, so it's a bit of an effort to switch pickups every time without slicing my fingers open as you can probably see here.

This video was done in one single take with the 'Blood Eagle' Archetype Nolly preset in my ears the whole time, including during the cleans. After recording, I did a bit of post-production to give parts different tones as needed. I used the 'Prog Metal Rhythm' preset for the more intricate parts, 'Blood Eagle' for the low end bits, 'Delicate Clean' for the cleans, and 'Articulate Lead' for the solo.

Pinch harmonics remain my kryptonite.

It's my third and likely final full BTF tab since I'm sure the official tab book will be out soon, even if I've also completed transcribing Reverie on the Onyx and AUM for myself.
