The Why and How of Math Contests

The word "competition" evokes strong emotions. Some love the thrill of competing. Many others find the pressure anxiety-inducing. However, if the competition world is approached with a healthy mindset, that environment can build tremendous strength and inner confidence. Speaker Po-Shen Loh grew up on the academic competition circuit, participating in competitions ranging from math to science to debate, and ultimately representing the USA on international competition teams in both math and computer programming. He went on to coach teams ranging in scope from the local school to the nation. In this seminar, he will share his observations of effective methods to leverage the competition environment to bring out the best in each person. He will also outline the landscape of mathematics competitions, and share effective methods for preparing for the competitions themselves.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Po-Shen Loh

Po-Shen Loh is a social entrepreneur, working across the full spectrum of mathematics and education, all around the world. He is a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and the founder of the free personalized learning platform expii.com, a social enterprise supported by his series of online math courses that reinvent the middle school math curriculum with a focus on creative thinking. He is also the national coach of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team. Previously, he was most known for finding a simpler way to solve quadratic equations, coaching the winning USA International Math Olympiad team, or giving free interactive math lessons to the world. During the COVID-19 outbreak, he turned his mathematical attention to developing NOVID, the first anonymous contact tracing app released in the USA for both Android + iOS which collects no personal information (no GPS, phone number, or email).
