KISS photos (1973-1974) Strutter (Demo)

KISS is an American rock band formed in New York City in January 1973. Well-known for its members face paint and flamboyant stage outfits. With their makeup and costumes, they took on the personas of comic book-style characters : The Starchild (Paul Stanley), The Demon (Gene Simmons), The Spaceman or Space Ace (Ace Frehley) and The Catman (Peter Criss).

The band explains that the fans were the ones who ultimately chose their makeup designs. Paul became the "The Starchild" because of his tendency to be referred to as "starry-eyed lover" and "hopeless romantic". "The Demon" makeup reflected Gene cynicism and dark sense of humor, as well as his affection for comic books. Ace's "The Spaceman" makeup was a reflection of his fondness for science fiction and supposedly being from another planet. Peter "The Catman" makeup was in accordance with the belief that he had nine lives because of his rough childhood in Brooklyn.

Character development was somewhat skewed with there being a lot of experiment in how the band members appeared visually, both with makeup and costumes. Gene and Peter seem to have been the first to really work with facial designs, with Paul appearing more like a mime, or simply using heavy rouge. Initially, Gene's eyes were mere blobs, but slowly his eyes became more bat-like. Peter's makeup underwent slight refinement with the whiskers growing (and changing direction at times) and the eye effect moving away from what Gene's was early on - two separate eye designs rather than the demon design with a small line down the nose separating the eye designs. Ace simply using his silver eye design without the rest of the white facial makeup. Ace's makeup changed the least, and the main difference was the application of whiteface and thicker black borders rather than just using the eye designs above a rouge base.

Eventually Paul design the star around one eye, though applying the makeup was quite difficult to get the appearance correct. For a short while Paul experimented with his "Bandit" design, though it appeared more like a raccoon. He did, however, wear this design at two shows in January 1974, and during a photo shoot.
