16. OSPF multi-area explained — areas, ABRs and LSA types in Cisco Packet Tracer | Part 1 #16
Single-area OSPF works for 3 routers — but what about 50? Learn why multi-area OSPF exists and how Areas, ABRs, and LSA types make it scale. Part 1 of 2.
In Part 1 of our OSPF Multi-Area series, we explain WHY single-area OSPF breaks down at scale (LSA flooding, SPF storms, oversized routing tables) and introduce the key concepts you must understand before configuring: Area 0 as the mandatory backbone, ABRs maintaining dual LSDBs, all five LSA types, the difference between O and O IA routes, and route summarisation at area boundaries.
We then expand the Elpda Solutions SA enterprise network from 3 cities to 5 — adding RTR-PTA-01 (Pretoria, Area 1, 10.10.6.0/24) and RTR-BLM-01 (Bloemfontein, Area 2, 10.10.7.0/24). By the end of Part 1 the topology is built and interfaces are configured. Part 2 covers the full OSPF multi-area configuration and verification.
What you will learn in Part 1:
- Why single-area OSPF fails at scale — the 3 specific problems
- OSPF areas — what they are and why Area 0 is mandatory
- ABR (Area Border Router) — what it is and how it maintains two LSDBs
- LSA Type 1 (Router), Type 2 (Network), Type 3 (Summary), Type 5 (External)
- O vs O IA vs O E2 — what each routing table code means
- Route summarisation — how it reduces routing tables and isolates topology changes
- Expanding the topology: adding Pretoria (Area 1) and Bloemfontein (Area 2)
- New WAN subnets: 10.10.102.0/30 (JHB↔PTA) and 10.10.103.0/30 (CTT↔BLM)
- Configuring all interfaces on RTR-PTA-01 and RTR-BLM-01
All examples continue the Elpda Solutions SA enterprise network. The full area design: Area 0 = WAN backbone + DBN, Area 1 = JHB + PTA, Area 2 = CTT + BLM.
