Their length is 18 to 22 Inches, wingspan is 34 to 38 Inches, weigh - 270 to 512 Grams. They usually have a hunched posture. In breeding season, they develop long rufous buff plumes on the crown, back and lower neck. In courtship the bill, legs, and irises become bright red and the lores turn purple pink. Males are larger than females and have more intense breeding colors. Primarily they are insectivores and is, moreover, considered as a grasshopper specialist. They are the most widespread and abundant egret species worldwide.

01:21 Chinese Egret
Also known as Swinhoe's Egret, they are rare and vulnerable species globally. In India they are found in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Their length is 25 to 27 Inches, wingspan is 39 Inches, weigh - 390 to 550 Grams. They have a Narrow “S” Shaped Neck. They are a medium-sized all white Egret with yellow bill and feet and dark legs. Irises are pale white yellow. The lores are variably yellow green, to green, to grey. Crest feathers are long and dense, sometimes over 11 cm long. They are highly migratory and prefer coastal estuaries and lagoons. Their favorite technique is running rapidly to and fro, with wings often half-spread, feeding on small fish and shrimps.

02:13 Great Egret
Also known as common egret, or large egret found in the Northern parts of India. Their length is 31 to 41 Inches, wingspan is 52 to 67 Inches, weigh - 700 to 1500 Grams. They usually stand still and erect in shallow waters for their prey. They are a large, slender, white egret, with long neck, dark legs and long back plumes when breeding. In courtship, the bill turns bright orange, then fading back to yellow. In breeding their Iris are yellow and has an outer red ring, lores are bright green. They nest in reed beds or in trees or bushes, usually isolated stands near water or on islands. Clutch size consists of usually 3 to 5 pale blue colored eggs.

03:02 Intermediate Egret
Also known as median egret, or yellow-billed egret found in the Indian Subcontinent except the North West of India. Their bill is yellow, often with a black tip. Their length is 22 to 28 Inches, wingspan is 41 to 45 Inches, weigh - 400 Grams. Their posture is upright with neck extended forward. Their size is between the great egret and the little egret. Great egret's gape line extends behind the eye, while the intermediate's is less pointed and ends below the eye. They prefer sheltered water less than 80 cm deep with emergent grasses. They are diurnal and typically solitary hunters. Both sexes build the nest, with the female usually completing it with materials brought by the male. Both males and females steal sticks from nearby nests. Their eggs are pale green, smooth and slightly pitted.

04:01 Little Egret
