The Racing Engine So Advanced NASA Asked to Study It

In 1994, Honda built the RA168E engine for their Formula 1 program. It produced 685 horsepower from a 1.5 litre turbocharged engine. The size of a briefcase. Engineers at the time said it was physically impossible. Honda achieved it through a technique called compound turbocharging — two turbos staged in sequence, each feeding the other. The power-to-displacement ratio had never been seen outside aerospace. NASA's propulsion division formally requested technical documentation from Honda after the season ended. Honda declined. The engine was locked in a vault in Tochigi, Japan. It has never been publicly displayed. Some technology is too valuable to share.
