'If it's not broke, we don't need to reinvent it': Heilbronn on firefighter volunteer system
South Coast RFSQ representative Ben Heilbronn says the volunteer firefighter model, boasting 200,000 members in Australia, has effectively served for 100 years without needing changes.
However, a recent summit proposed introducing paid seasonal contract workers for the upcoming fire season.
Mr Heilbronn highlighted the divisive nature of seasonal contracts, where some firefighters get paid on the same grounds where they volunteered just weeks before.
"If it's not broke, we don't need to reinvent it," he told Sky News host Amanda Stoker.
"We need to have more support for our volunteers, and they need to be supported at the highest levels of federal government and state governments."
