Design Project | Mechanical Engineering | One way Uni Directional Mechanism|
Hi there,
This is a design & fabrication of a small scale mechanism for converting the non-uniform and bidirectional motion of rotation to uniform one-directional rotation.
Our objective is to create a mechanism with one input and two output gears. The input gear rotates either clockwise or anti-clockwise direction with manual input, whereas the output gear will only rotate in one way.
There will be one pinion (Sliding Idler Gear) which slides due to gear forces and there will be a path for the required sliding mechanism.
Normally we see the windmills near the coastal areas and at high altitudes for the power generation using the flow of wind.
But there is a limitation for the windmill it can rotate only in one direction either clockwise or anti-clockwise.
In this project, we designed a mechanism which can convert the direction of rotation of windmill according to wind flow.
The main advantage of this one-way mechanism is it can generate electricity continuously regardless of the flow direction of the wind.
So that the efficiency of the wind energy can be increased.
When the input direction is changed to opposite direction the pinion gear shifts to the other side in the path and gives unique output.
The further development of this project is to use this mechanism to generate electricity from wave & tidal energy
The major application of this mechanism was in Energy generation through Windmills in those areas where the direction of wind affects the rotational direction of the wind turbine.
This idea will help us to generate continuous rotary motion of shaft from the non-continuous rotation of the shaft (to and fro motion of shaft) as in case of tidal waves. Tidal waves cause a turbine to rotate clockwise and anticlockwise during their journey and we can convert this motion for continuous shaft rotation for generation of Electricity using dynamo.
In this design and fabrication of mechanism, we made it in a small scale to check the mechanism. Basically, we had done the project by the usage of normal spur gear with providing manual torque. We can further improve this project by adding shafts and connecting it to a dynamo. By installing the sensors and modification in design will improve the windmill power generation.
Further, the mechanical design installed in this system could be used in marine areas to generate continuous electricity from high and low tides by connecting with a dynamo/alternator and turbine assembly and it could be used for Tidal energy generation.

we made slight modifications in his design for ease of fabrication purpose & fabricated the same as our Design Project in 6th semester.
This video is a Time Lapse of Our work with so many Pictures in it. It also contains Design, Fabrication, Assembly & working of the Mechanism.
As this is Just a design project, we have not connected shafts & dynamo Etc.. to generate electricity with manual Torque.
