14 Extremely Terrifying Hellraiser Stories That Will Make Your Skin Crawl!

The Hellraiser franchise is a British supernatural horror series, adapted from Clive Barker’s famous novella, The Hellbound Heart. The first Hellraiser film, Barker’s feature debut, saw an inexperienced director take on an ambitious horror project that reached several screens and touched several lives. Of course, he was already an icon of horror literature and, as some say, England’s version of Stephen King.

The Hellraiser films blend elements of sadomasochism with demonic body horror. It’s a grotesque franchise that creates a protagonist shift mid-film, from Clare Higgins’ Julia Cotton to the cenobites. Throughout the series, these cenobites that are the High Priests of Hell, enforce the purest evil on everyone. They are summoned when mortals solve a puzzle box known as the Lemarchand’s box, portrayed in the Lament Configuration form. Their deeds are illustrated to viewers via themes of lustful sexuality and morbid, gruesome visuals in fleshy detail. Some of the horrors are also inflicted psychologically.
