Making an LED RGB Acrylic Sign using Carbide Shapeoko CNC Router #cncrouter #acrylicled

In this video, we create a stunning acrylic LED sign using a Shapeoko CNC router. Give the gamer in your life an awesome piece of decor for their gaming setup.

First, we do the design in Illustrator and export it as a PNG. Make sure you use gentle flowing curves at the bottom to better help distribute light to evenly spread light. Next, import your design into Carbide Create. For this, we’ll be using the non-pro version, even though the pro version has an engrave function.

For the bit, we’ll be using our McEtcher bit from Carbide. For settings, I’m using the Diamond Drag Bit with a 0.005 stepover and 0.05 depth per pass. The plunge is 30, feed rate is 60 and the RPM I have at 750, even though we don’t use the router to engrave, only to hold the bit.

For the toolpath, use a pocket cutout with a depth of 0.05. This will lead to engraving everything only one time to save you time. We’ll use a single flute ⅛” bit to cut around the edges of the design.

After that, you can setup the material on your Shapeoko and start the etching. This process takes a while. After that, we swap in our single flute ⅛” router bit and cut out the design.

Once we have that finished, it’s time to clean up the edges with a little sandpaper. This gets rid of tape residue and plastic splinters.

Now, we’re ready to test fit the piece and test. I purchased these LED bases from Amazon and Acrylic from Home Depot. The brand is Optix. Overall, I’m extremely happy with the end result. If you like making stuff as much as I do, feel free to follow and show this video some love!
