Stories to tell

Our Jelgava City Library does not have only books in its collection. In fact, the building itself is an important part of the collection.

The City Library of Jelgava has been housed in the historical area of the city in one of the rare buildings, which survived the bombing of The World War II. This House was built in the second half of the 19th century as a tenement house and it has experienced and witnessed many different eras.

Jelgava City Library is a member of the initiative of the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO "Storytelling libraries". It is a special cooperation and experience sharing platform of Latvian libraries, wherein a wide range of activities dedicated to the cultural heritage and the tradition of storytelling are implemented, in order to promote informal education in the field of heritage through storytelling as a significant part of intangible cultural heritage. The initiative of the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO emphasizes the value of libraries in Latvia, as well as strengthens ties between generations and promotes social cohesion.
