It’s your friendly neighborhood spooky ghost ninja here, arising from the shadowy Void to review Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor—or as I like to call it, “Off With Their Heads Simulator: Orc Edition.” Or. “The Legend Of The Spooky Bright Lord And His Not So Bright Vessel.”

First off, let’s talk about potentially the coolest game mechanic of all time… the Shadow Strike kill—aka “Blinky Bam Thank U Mam.” One instant I’m miles away, the next I’m giving some poor orc an up-close view of my dagger. It’s like playing peekaboo, but instead of “boo,” it’s “stab.” recommend without reservation.

Also the Bright Lord Celebrimbor the ring maker is one of my fav characters of all time and I choose to believe this version of him was canon much more than the pompous pansy Amazon rendition. I mean come on … Ethereal? Check. Glowier than a rave party? Double check. He’s like Gandalf’s overachieving cousin who skipped the fireworks and went straight to vaporizing enemies. Between him and me, we’re the ultimate spooky tag team: swordplay from me, ghastly sass from him.

Honestly, this game is all about bullying orcs in increasingly creative ways—branding them, interrogating them, turning a warchiefs own bodyguards on him or my fav: shadow-striking into their entire social circle for maximum chaos. And the Nemesis System? Bliss! After experiencing it I see why the devs patented it. Every time I thought I’d seen the last of some cocky orc captain, BAM—here comes Fannybaws the Thrice-Murdered, back for revenge with a bad attitude and worse dental hygiene.

This was the second time round I’ve haunted Mordor and I would do it again. If you’re not abusing shadow powers and traumatizing orcs with shiny elven ghost powers, are you even playing the game?
