Yassaman Ameri | The Inheritance & The Artist
The Inheritance & The Artist
An OI Museum Special Exhibit Talk by Yassaman Ameri
Over the course of 25 years, multimedia artist Yassaman Ameri researched and created the series The Inheritance. This collection is born of a gift Ameri received from her mother some 25 years ago, a postcard containing 36 small and faded portraits of mostly unveiled women, produced during the Qajar era in Iran. Selected images from The Inheritance are currently displayed in a special exhibition entitled Antoin Sevruguin: Past and Present at the Oriental Institute Museum (through December 31, 2021). The relationship Ameri explores between various sources of Qajar imagery in The Inheritance invites a fresh perspective on the values and assumptions found in Sevruguin’s own work from that same period. In this talk, Ameri shares her personal account of how The Inheritance came to be and the intention behind the choices she made in creating these images. Tasha Vorderstrasse, curator of Antoin Sevruguin: Past and Present, will join Yassaman for a discussion and Q & A following the talk.
