Erosion Menace: Senator Victor Umeh Makes Case For Oba & Other Communities In South East

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Victor Umeh OFR on Thursday 6th July, 2023 informed the Senate of the devastating effects of Erosion in the South East geopolitical zone.

Senator Umeh made the presentation while seconding a motion sponsored by Senator Osita Izunaso. He further notified the Senate of devastating erosion disaster in parts of Imo West, Anambra South and Anambra Central Senatorial Districts pointing out in particular, the tragic erosion that wrecked part of Onitsha-Owerri expressway.

He said: “The menace of erosion in the South East region generally is very horrendous. These communities mentioned by my distinguished brother, Senator Osita Izunaso in his motion paper, they lie in the bother between Imo state and Anambra state.

“Right now, so many buildings are collapsing in the different erosion sites in the South East geopolitical zone particularly, along this belt: Imo West Senatorial District, Anambra South Senatorial District, Anambra Central Senatorial District and other places.

“The havoc which landslide and flood erosion are wrecking to the communities involved are quite enormous.

“Mr President, I rise to second this Motion because it requires urgent and timely intervention of relevant agencies of government to address them.

“As I speak here Mr President, there is a section of Anambra State, around Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area where the erosion is already cutting the Federal Highway into two near Rojenny Tourist/Game Village and it is by urgent action through this type of motion that the relevant agencies of government will be drawn to these sites so that we prevent further loss of lives and properties.”

The ranking senator urged the Senate to pay cogent attention to the erosion disaster in South East and solicited for the solidarity of other Senators declaring that erosion is a very huge problem in the South East Geopolitical Zone.
