Sunbittern – 90 Days from Egg to Survivor

The life of a sunbittern begins in a carefully hidden nest built on tree branches near rivers and forest streams. After days of quiet incubation, a tiny chick hatches, covered in soft patterned down that helps it blend into the dappled light of its surroundings.

In the early days, the chick depends entirely on its parents for food and protection. The adults bring insects, small fish, and aquatic creatures while keeping a constant watch for predators. As the chick grows, it begins to explore nearby branches, learning balance and awareness in the dense forest.

Over time, its wings develop the striking patterns that resemble rays of sunlight—its greatest defense when threatened. By around 90 days, the young sunbittern gains strength and confidence, ready to glide through the forest and survive on its own, carrying the beauty and mystery of its species into the wild.
