Abundance of Australian snubfin and humpback dolphins in the Kimberley

Dr Alex Brown from Murdoch presents their findings on the relative abundance and population genetic structure of snubfin and humpback dolphins in the Kimberley. This research has involved boat based surveys to record, photograph and collect biopsy samples from individual dolphins at several key sites across the Kimberley to develop a better understanding of local populations and their connectivity, and to identify critical areas for long term monitoring. Dr Josh Smith, Dr Chandra Salgado Kent and Sarah Marley speak about the application of passive acoustic monitoring to humpback and snubfin dolphins and the ability to detect dolphin presence and relative abundance. These projects have worked with Indigenous rangers in the Kimberley and with Parks and Wildlife staff to share monitoring protocols, techniques and field experience to support long term monitoring of these species.
