In one night, 23 years of life came to an end. There would be no more movies or concerts. And there would be no more laughing with a group of friends or harmlessly teasing of siblings. There wouldn’t be even another sun rise. River Phoenix’s life was over.

The loss of life is difficult concept to understand, especially when the timing comes so quickly and so tragically. Even 21 years after his passing River’s death continues to leave many asking “Why?” While the facts are present and indisputable, the question still remains. How could someone so young and with so much promise just end?

Poet Mary Oliver wrote, "Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too was a gift."

Despite his tragic passing, River Phoenix continues to inspire people today. He lives on through his music and movies, reaching out to people who have just discovered him. The love River gave during his life continues to grow in the hearts of those who knew him. That is where he lives on; still ever present and ever cherished. In that way he will never end.

If there is anything we must take from the story of River Phoenix, it is to love all without condition, to give without reason, and to use al that we are given, for we will never know when our sun is to set.
