Ukraine carried out its largest drone attack on Russia in more than a year overnight, targeting Moscow and over a dozen other regions with more than 500 drones, according to Russian officials.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted and destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones across 14 regions, including the capital. Moscow regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov confirmed that at least 3 people were killed and 4 injured in the Moscow area. One woman died when a drone struck her home, and another victim was trapped under rubble for hours.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that debris from intercepted drones injured 12 people around the capital and caused minor damage to several buildings, including an oil refinery construction site. No disruption to refinery operations was reported.

The attack comes days after a Russian strike on Kyiv killed 24 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the strikes were retaliation and warned Russia that “this war must end.”

Russian authorities called the incident a terrorist attack and accused Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure. The scale of the strike marks a major escalation in the ongoing drone and missile war between the two countries.
