German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has promised federal "solidarity" after the western state of Saar was hit by floods and landslides.
He toured some of the affected areas with a leading state politician.
The German Meteorological Service reported that over 100 liters of rain per square meter fell in less than 24 hours.
By comparison, Saar received an average of about 74 liters of rain per square meter for the entire month of April last year.
Several neighboring countries to Germany have also experienced heavy rains and flooding in recent days.
