King Charles highlights shared values

King Charles III told a joint session of the United States Congress that the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom represents a historic story of reconciliation and enduring partnership, forged from conflict 250 years ago into one of the world’s most consequential alliances.

Speaking during the 250th anniversary year of American independence, Charles urged both nations to remain outward-looking and continue working with global partners rather than turning inward. He said the alliance should be strengthened in the service of shared democratic values and international stability.

Quoting President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Charles emphasized that “the world may little note what we say, but will never forget what we do,” underscoring the importance of action over rhetoric in global leadership.

He called on the two nations to “rededicate” themselves to one another and to the broader global community, praising their long-standing cooperation across security, diplomacy and shared values.

The king concluded by offering a blessing to both nations, saying, “God bless the United States, and God bless the United Kingdom.”
