Why is the Most Advanced Japanese Car of its Time so Unloved? Mitsubishi 3000GT / GTO

It should be a legend, it was 20 years ahead of the curve and yet the Mitsubishi GTO has never measured up to to other Japanese JDM legends like the Nissan R32 or Subaru Impreza. Is this because it is genuinely bad or is there another reason for this lack of love for one of the most significant cars of its time.
