Introduction to RACE

Remote Applications in Challenging Environments (RACE) is UKAEA’s centre for developing robotics and remote maintenance, with applications in nuclear fusion and other technology areas.

RACE is responsible for the remote handling system that we use on the JET fusion device. This system, called MASCOT, allows engineers to repair and upgrade JET remotely.

RACE is working with various industrial partners, including ITER. ITER is the next major step on the roadmap to commercial fusion. It will be the largest fusion device yet, and will aim to produce more than ten times net energy. The work done at UKAEA by RACE will help to solve various maintenance issues using their expertise in remote operations.

Our work extends into various other areas too such as: Working with the European Spallation Source project in Sweden; developing connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) technology with Oxbotica; and the wider nuclear energy industry as part of the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence for Nuclear (RAIN) Hub.
