Wrong.

Tea Pets have been around since China’s Song Dynasty.
Quality clay was too precious to have “leftovers” for “cute decorations”.
And consider the earliest tea pets … three legged toads, grinning tigers, dragons...
So what's the real meaning of tea pets?
Magic, and sacrifice.
Tea pets were created for the purpose of “good luck magic” which you may know as feng shui.
BUT
Unlike most fengshui symbols, tea pets are used for symbolic sacrifice/
Most ancient cultures believed in the magic of sacrifice.
Now, we don’t recommend taking lives to propitiate the heavens…..
But we certainly recommend giving up something dear to you, to see the magic effects it has on your state of mind.
The tea pet sacrifice, however, is utterly symbolic, and very Chinese.
In traditional Chinese tea making, the first steep is poured out, in order to get rid of impurities.
But instead of just letting it go to waste, the pragmatic Chinese decided to pour the tea on clay figurines representing forces they wanted to propitiate.
And that’s how tea pets became a tradition. Instead of letting the first steep go to waste, it was used as a symbolic sacrifice to lucky symbols carved from tea pot clay.
Now you don’t have to believe in making sacrifices to good luck symbols in order to enjoy teapets.
Just like teapots, if teapets are made from quality yixing clay, they will grow more lustrous , the more tea you pour over them.
There aren’t many objects left that we can buy and improve over time.
That’s why teapets make fantastic collectibles, improved by the healthies habit there is –drinking tea!
