About the Program: Natyashastra is the foundational Sanskrit treatise on the performing arts, encompassing drama, dance, and music. Compiled by Bharata Muni. It was composed between 200 BCE and 200 CE and is often revered as the "Fifth Veda" because it makes the spiritual wisdom of the Vedas accessible through performance. This is how the difficult concepts presented in the Vedas were understood by the common people. The text consists of 36 chapters with a cumulative total of 6,000 poetic verses describing performance arts. The subjects covered by the treatise include dramatic composition, structure of a play and the construction of a stage to host it, genres of acting, body movements, make up and costumes, role and goals of an art director, the musical scales, musical instruments and the
integration of music with art performance.

Outcomes: Following are the outcomes of the program
• Understanding how the Natyashastra has been organised gives the necessary introduction and understanding of the depth of thought of our ancestors.
• Understanding various aspects of Classical Dance – Body movements, eye movements, make-up, attire, 16 shringaar and mental framework.
• Understanding various aspects of Drama – Actors approach, practice, Rasa, Bhava, NayakNayika.
• To present all this and have an impact, the stage and the amphitheatre was equally important. The details of stage and seating construction has been explained in this treatise for maximum impact.
• This section explains the important position ‘Art’ holds in our society and how it can be a mirror to the society impacting it positively.
