The upcoming Black Panther sequel titled Wakanda Forever will not only end Phase four of the MCU–but also allow a new character to take up the role of the Black Panther. The loss of Chadwick Boseman looms large over this production, and the film’s central question is: Who is the new black panther?

These scenes in the trailer show a funeral that we assume will be T’Challa. And odds are, this is very early in the film. When we first met T’Challa, he was already the Black Panther–but not yet King. He had to enter a ritual combat to take the throne. However, the Black Panther is a mantle that is passed down not necessarily just from Father to Son, but from Warrior to Warrior.

As far as we know, T’Challa did not have a child before he passed away. So there is no straight-line to the next character that would become King or the Black Panther. And right now, Wakanda needs both–they just revealed themselves to the rest of the world. And the loss of a King creates a power vacuum that will attract enemies trying to steal Wakanda’s power.

We already saw this in the first Black Panther movie, after the death of King T’Chaka. Also, we know that one of Marvel’s oldest characters–Namor–will be rising from the water to be the villain of this movie. The filmmakers have also chosen to change his backstory from the comics. They’ve changed his home from Atlantis to an Aztec spiritual realm, that just happens to have a lot to do with resurrection. This leads us to believe that there is only one character that could take on the mantle of the Black Panther, and that is Erik Killmonger.

But wait, he is dead. We saw him die.

Well Doug, what does “dead” really mean in the MCU? Look at everything we have learned about the afterlife since the release of the Black Panther. On the recent Disney + series Moon Knight, we learned that in the MCU there isn’t just one afterlife, but many. And most are created around the beliefs of the deceased. Moon Knight also showed us an example of a character dying and being brought back from the afterlife, more than once. Also, the post credit scene from Thor: Love and Thunder, seemed to also hint that even after someone dies they are not always gone and can be brought back. And of course we’ve seen the spirits of dead Wakandans can still commune from the afterlife.

Because of this, first, we have to talk about the changes they’ve made to Namor. Since some of those changes might have been made to better facilitate the return of a dead character.

Namor is one of the oldest characters in the history of Marvel comics. First appearing next to Captain America and an Android version of the Human Torch in Marvel Comics #1, in 1939. This means that Namor actually predates Aquaman by two years.

But even before Jason Momoa took on the role in the DCEU, Namor never really rose to the same level of popularity or prevalence as his fellow Atlantean. This makes it difficult for Marvel to bring the character to the big screen. After all, we just saw a movie introducing us to a gruff dude from a super-science undersea kingdom. And he’s also the only member of the Justice League left who we can look up to. Plus, that movie had an octopus playing the drums, crab people, Mary Poppins voicing a fish, a whale headbutting a spaceship–there is no way Marvel could out-science Aquaman.

Because of all this, director Ryan Coogler has reportedly made drastic changes to the Namor character. He’s changed his home realm of the lost city of Atlantis, to a realm called Talocan. This is based on the spirit realm from Aztec culture, known as Tlālōcān. This is a heavenly paradise created for warriors that died from drowning.
