Heart and Soul Nebulae – Star-Forming Giants in the Milky Way | WISE Infrared View

Explore the stunning Heart and Soul nebulae, a vast star-forming region located about 6,000 light-years away in the Perseus spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. Captured by NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), this infrared mosaic reveals stars forming in cooler, dustier regions that are invisible to optical telescopes.

The Heart Nebula (right) is named for its resemblance to a human heart, while the Soul Nebula (left), also called the Embryo Nebula, hosts clusters of newborn stars just a few million years old tiny infants compared to our nearly 5-billion-year-old Sun.

In addition, this image features two nearby galaxies, Maffei 1 and Maffei 2, at about 10 million light-years away. Maffei 1 is a bluish elliptical galaxy, and Maffei 2 is a spiral galaxy. Though outside our Milky Way, they are relatively close compared to most galaxies, making this field a stunning combination of stellar nurseries and galactic neighbors.
