Second fire overrun at Carwoola fire, 17Feb 2017

During the Taliesin fire in Carwoola on 17 Feb 2017, one of our members, Mark C, was involved in a significant fire overrun incident during which two trucks collided and two firefighters were injured (including Mark). This is his video of his crew trying to extricate themselves after this overrun when they were overrun a second time.

Mark had joined a crew from Burra brigade and had been directed to a spotfire when they were flagged down by a FRNSW truck who realised they may be about to be overrun and needed protection from the RFS truck’s crew protection sprays. They pulled alongside and two of the crew got down, the Crew Leader to talk to the FRNSW crew and Mark to pull out a hose.

Very quickly they also realised they were about to be overrun. Mark ran back to the truck and was burned on his arm and face just climbing back into the truck. In the smoky confusion, a third truck, trying to avoid the overrun, backed into the Burra truck, crushing the Burra CL between two trucks just as the overrun occurred.

Afterwards, once the CL had been freed, treated on scene and evacuated, the Burra truck then had to evacuate itself. Unfortunately the truck was now out of water, had a door that would not close and damaged brakes. As they slowly drove out, they were overrun by fire a second time (around the 2:00 mark in the video) and the crew other than the driver went under the protective blankets a second time.
