Davis, Daniel Paul, Crucible One, Incidental Music for the play, (2003).

This video is in two sections, the first few minutes were improvised on an electronic keyboard/sequencer. The music was used as exit and intro music for intermission and back into the second act. After the play ended its run I transcribed the music. It then became a section of a larger work for orchestra. the second half is the string orchestra realization and elaboration of the improvised opening. The images are photos from all around the US. including the Tumwater (Wenatchee) river in Washington State, the 4th of July Canyon in New Mexico, a painting by my mother and a cross of apple seeds. There are certain aspects of my life in a rather closed Christian community that echo this story of suspicion and overly zealous preachers and fearful congregants. This play really dug into me, and the music that I composed captures the harsh reality of people who really should not have ventured so far away from the ease of European life.
