Harvest Process of Cannabis

Harvest Process of Cannabis

Professor DeBacco
Even Before Harvest…
While many growers focus on the harvest process, remember, that before you begin the process of harvesting you should have the next step (drying and curing) all set to go.
No sense harvesting if you are not ready to move the material through the final phases of the process.
Determining When To Harvest
This comes from an inspection of the buds themselves.
A combination of stigma and trichome development is used to pinpoint the peak harvest time.
In short when the stigmas are tan/brown and the trichomes are mostly a cloudy with a few starting to turn amber color is a sign harvest time is “now”.
Preparing the Plants
When you determine the plants are close to harvest time, be sure to allow some time to flush them where you only give them water and not nutrients to remove any excessive build-ups of nutrients or salts in the root zone.
Need to Have More Than the Plants
Be sure you have the following on hand to make the harvesting process as efficient as possible…
Pruners
Transport Surface
Time/Labor
Pruners
These are used for cutting back branches and are different from scissors that are used more for the detail work of trimming.
These are typically the rough and tough plant take down tools that are especially useful for removing the central stem at ground level.
Transport Surface
Since you are likely to have the growing location separate from the drying location a method of moving the plants needs to be implemented.
Depending on size of harvest and distance this can involve a trailer or a cart.
In either situation the goal is to have a clean surface and to not overly pack the plants during transport to avoid physically damaging the plants during this process.
Time and Labor
Having an idea of the scale of your operation and plants you determine to be ready for harvest, make sure you have enough time and helping hands to get the job done.
This is often a labor intensive process so be sure you pace your progress and keep an eye on everyone.
Whole Plant Harvest Process of Cannabis
Advantages
Allows for clearing an entire plant material all at the same time.
Makes for easy planning and clearing of an area.
Great if the planned end product is concentrates
Disadvantages
The most labor intensive of the harvesting process options.
All of the plant material has to be handled at the same time.
Selective Plant Harvest Process of Cannabis
Advantages
Allows growers to select only the buds that are at their prime.
Can provide the opportunity for other buds to continue to develop and get more yield
Disadvantages
Requires multiple times to go though plants to harvest

Time can care need to be taken to carefully remove only the buds at peak harvest.
