Louis Armstrong - The Gypsy (Decca Records 1953)

"The Gypsy" is a popular song written by Billy Reid, and published in 1945. It was originally introduced in the United Kingdom by Reid's orchestra and vocalist Dorothy Squires. In the United States, the song was recorded by The Ink Spots, by Dinah Shore, and by Sammy Kaye's orchestra. The song tells the story of a person who regularly visits a Gypsy, who comforts them by telling them that their lover has been faithful, though as the song says, the person knows that Gypsy is wrong and that their lover has been unfaithful.

Louis's accompanied by Lou McGarity, Cutty Cutshall, Phil Giardina, Jack Satterfield, (trombone); Billy Butterfield, Andy Ferretti, Carl Poole, (trumpet); Hymie Schertzer (alto & baritone saxophone); Al Klink (tenor saxophone); Bernie Leighton (piano); Carmen Mastren (guitar); Sandy Block (bass); Ed Grady (drums); and Toots Camarata, arranger, conductor.

In a quaint caravan
There's a lady they call The Gypsy
She can look in the future
And drive away all your fears

Everything will come right
If you only believe The Gypsy
She can tell at a glance
That your heart's full of tears

She looked at my hand
and told me
My lover was always true
But deep in my hear I know dear
Somebody else is kissing you
But I'll go there again
'Cause I want to believe
The Gypsy
Although I know she's lying
That my lover is true
And will come back to me some day
