Guillermo Del Toro's films all bear an unmistakable signature, one that he labors lovingly and obsessively to imprint. Protecting that signature has meant often defying the rules of Hollywood to follow his own creative instincts. Working against the odds, he has established himself as a creative genius and become one of the most important filmmakers working today.
But creative genius or not, Hollywood is a tough town, and survival comes with sacrifices. Del Toro has famously lost, abandoned, or shelved many projects very close to his heart. I wanted to take a brief look here at just a few of them.
