Sweep Picking For Beginners Guitar Lesson

Sweep picking is typically an electric guitar technique for playing arpeggios quickly. Often used in metal music or neoclassical guitar styles, sweep picking is a very popular guitar skill, but it takes a lot of practice to get the mechanics down correctly. An understanding of music theory and chord shapes also helps a lot when learning sweep picking on guitar.

This guitar lesson shows you the basics of how to sweep pick, starting on just 2 strings, with some nice sounding arpeggio progressions. An arpeggio is simply a chord played one note at a time. When sweep picking we want each note to sound independently, we don't want the notes to sound into each other like when playing a chord. I show you the finger mechanics to achieve this in the video, and also provide some guitar TABs on screen to help you learn easier!

The term sweep picking is a bit unusual, but it comes from the motion of the picking hand which does either all upstrokes, or all downstrokes, in a sweeping motion, so it's the look of the picking technique which gives it this name! If you are interested in hearing some of the best sweep pickers, check out the music of Jason Becker, Michael Angelo Batio, or Yngwie Malmsteen to see how they use the technique!
