HP 59401A Bus Analyzer and HP 10342B Bus Preprocessor for HP-IB Bus Sniffing

HP-IB was a high-performance bus for connecting peripherals and test instruments, introduced by HP in the late 1960’s. Today it’s known and standardized as GPIB (also called IEEE 488), and still popular in test instruments. At the time, this HP-only novelty vastly outperformed competition. Of course, HP also made great test instruments for debugging their bus: the charming, easy to use, paddle-driven HP 59401A, introduced in 1977, and the later and less charming but more efficient HP 19342B preprocessor for its 16xx logic analyzer series, which I both demonstrate while debugging the HP 7970E 9-track tape protocol.
