The Problem with Five Nights at Freddy's

This kinda sucks.

With the release of Security Breach's highly-anticipated free RUIN DLC, as well as the release of MatPat's first RUIN-related Game Theory episode, I can't help but feel like we're repeating the same lore loop that we've done countless times before, yet for some reason expecting different results.

Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

Instead of meaningful developments regarding Gregory, Vanessa/Vanny, or Cassie, all RUIN seems to have given us is some more vague lore recontextualizations. The Game Theory episode suggests that this is all a buildup for Help Wanted 2, but if that's true, that's awful. That implies that we're three games into this "new lore", yet the story hasn't even started yet!

We don't know a thing about Gregory. Him being a robot or being Patient 46 were among the biggest mysteries from Security Breach, and they were completely discarded. Vanessa/Vanny has been relegated to a wasted villain; a burning reminder of her missed potential, and the game gives us absolutely no motivations for our new character Cassie, and thus no reason to care about her.

This style of vague storytelling might've worked in the classic Five Nights at Freddy's games: FNAF 1 through Ultimate Custom Night were all 'investigation'-type games, where the events of the story generally occurred years prior to the actual game. Security Breach and the RUIN DLC are different - they place us in the shoes of characters with ACTUAL AGENCY towards the plot, and it's really disappointing that they're allowing these characters to waste away as lifeless, motivationless husks - they don't feel like real people.

I want to to be clear that I obviously LIKE Five Nights at Freddy's - anyone who can get this upset about a stupid robot bear obviously cares a lot about said bear. It's only because I care that I feel compelled to say all this.
