Most contractors scrolling SAM.gov skip right past the small, weird-sounding jobs. Pool leak detection. Fence repair. Sign post install. Grease trap pumping.

That's a mistake. And it's exactly why the people who DO pay attention are quietly stacking awards while everyone else is chasing the same $4M ground-up build everyone in their region is also chasing.

Case in point — a $12,600 federal contract just awarded for pool leak detection. Not pool construction. Not a renovation. Leak detection. The kind of job a two-truck shop can knock out in a day or two.

Here's the lesson: the federal government owns real estate everywhere. Bases, parks, recreation centers, lodging, family housing. All of it has pools, HVAC, roofs, doors, plumbing, asphalt, landscaping. And all of it breaks. When it breaks, somebody writes an RFQ.

The contractors who win this stuff aren't smarter than you. They just stopped filtering out the small dollar amounts and the strange-sounding scopes. A $12K leak detection job has almost no competition because everyone is too busy looking for the 'real' contracts.

Do five or ten of those a year and tell me that's not a real business. Especially when the margins on small specialty work are usually fatter than the big stuff — and you don't need a bond.

The RFQ world is full of these. You just have to know how to read what you're looking at, price it right, and not poke the bear during negotiation. That's the whole game.
