Britain's cladding scandal is getting worse and working its way onto everyone's doorstep

June 14 marks four years since the tragic events at Grenfell, which caused the deaths of 72 people and made hundreds homeless. 

In its wake, there were calls for investigations and promises that this would never be allowed to happen again. But thousands of people across the country are still living in buildings with unsafe cladding. Furthermore, they now live with – and often have to pay for – fire wardens and walking watches.

On top of the stress of living in a building that is at greater risk from fire, residents face looming bills of up to £100,000 to make their homes safe. The Government has pledged £5.1bn to fix the problem, but remediation specialist Colmore Tang Construction says the real cost could be up to ten times that amount.

The stamp duty holiday and pent up demand after lockdown has hidden this growing crisis and the housing market looks buoyant and secure. However, a crisis is snarling up the bottom of the housing ladder.
