When female southern white rhinos at the Safari Park weren't having calves, our researchers needed to figure out why. One possibility was phytoestrogen found in plants. Researchers found that when injected into a rhino's estrogen receptor cells, phytoestrogen blocked normal function. They then found that the hormone was present in the rhino's alfalfa and replaced it with another food. This seemingly fixed the issue, and now we're enjoying the result.
