FILM'S NOT DEAD
2018
Cyanotype prints on linen, 260x400 cm, photography on black and white negative film 120
The cyanotype prints Film’s Not Dead is co-authored by Dr. Lilyana Karadjova and students of the Photography Programme at the New Bulgarian University: Alexandra Argirova, Angelika Davidkova, Vladimir Ivanov, Victor Mladenov, Georgi Ivanov, Kiril Kralev, Kristian Kanchev, Kristina Todorova, Leonor Nikolova, Nina Stoimenova, Sanya Arnaudova, Yana Todorova.

The cyanotype prints Film’s Not Dead unites the creative energy of Dr. Lilyana Karadjova and 12 undergraduate students studying photography in the New Bulgarian University. Two huge cyanotype prints on fabric, 260 x 400 cm in size, are composed by traces of the participants' silhouettes in a meaningful rendition of the message that the photographic film has an irreplaceable potential to capture, preserve and express human reality.
In the past decade the creation of gigantic cyanotypes has become a happening on a global scale involving dozens of volunteers. Similar events have been held in Avignon, France in 2013, Panaji, Goa in 2014, London, UK, in 2015, Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2017. The project Film’s Not Dead held in Sofia in 2018 was not entered in a competition for the highest number of participants but constituted an attempt of a team of fellow photographers to focus themselves in the collective creation wherein to experience an intuition of photography. The inscription Film’s Not Dead was suggested by Alexandra Argirova, the idea for the experiment of a cyanotype print on fabric came from Yana Todorova, with some of the suggestions for elements in the composition coming from Christian Kunchev who developed the films.
The letters and symbols in the cyanotypes are composed from contact prints of 132 photos taken on a 120 mm film, cut on frames and separately cached on 132 pieces of glass. The photos show the participants in classic portraits, we well as while working with a camera, film or a magnifying glass. The sentence Film’s Not Dead in the cyanotype print is written using portraits of the participants. Their silhouettes are arranged around the film boundary of the inscription, made up by eight 35 mm films. In the cyanotype print Cyanometre the deep blue of the chemical process and the compositions embody the idea that the film serves as a space capsule which preserves human life, mind and experience of the material in space and time. The film is not alive in the literal sense, but imagination can revive it as a gateway to a parallel reality that flows in another and exciting synchronicity.
The exhibition was part of Sofia Month of Photography 2018 and is on display in The Red House Center for Culture and Debate, Sofia.
