Day 4: If there was relief for Masood after day 1 then he was back under pressure at the end of day 3. His bowlers picked up only 2 wickets the entire day and went at almost 5 rpo. Abrar Ahmed was a big let down as he couldn't give Pakistan any control nor was he penetrative in fact in the last session he resorted to bowling round the wicket and outside the batters leg-stump but still wasn't able to contain the runs.

Even the second new ball did not bring them any success as the pacers struggled against Root and Brook. The Yorkshire pair complemented each other perfectly Brook kept the aggressive approach going at one end while Root was just himself - knocking it around rotating strike and putting the bad balls away. But the partnership between Crawley and Root underlined the difficulty of the task that lies ahead of the Pakistan bowlers. England did their share of the grind for 149 overs and now it's the turn of the hosts on a pitch that still remains pretty lifeless. England have ticked along nicely to 96/1 in response to Pakistan's total of 556. The visitors were dealt with a blow as Ben Duckett couldn't open the batting due to an injury to his thumb.

Day 2: There were two centurions yesterday - Shafique and Masood - but there will be one relieved person today. Masood had lost all 5 Tests he had captained the side he had lost a home series to Bangladesh he hadn't scored much runs in those games and the pressure was enormous coming into this series. He struggled at the start of the innings but eased into it as the day progressed and notched up his 5th Test ton - much needed for himself and Pakistan.

The 253-run partnership between him and Shafique has the laid the foundation for the middle order. Can Shakeel and Co. seize the initiative? England picked only one wicket in the first two sessions yesterday and tried almost everything during that time but in the third session they kept it tight which in turn got them the wickets. The second new ball did do a bit and was the reason for another Babar failure. It is only 5 overs old. Can England get few more wickets out of it?

So we are back to where Pakistan's downward slide at home began. Less than two years ago England handed Pakistan a 26-run defeat in what was the last Test played at the Multan Cricket Stadium. It might have been the closest margin of defeat of the series but the defeat inflicted a psychological blow that Pakistan seem unable to come out of.

Much has changed since then. England have made adjustments in their ultra-aggressive approach towards Test cricket following their 4-1 hammering in India at the start of the year. Pakistan have a new captain and a new coaching set-up following successive changes in the Pakistan Cricket Board.
