Using a watercolor wash to start a drawing.

Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course.

This drawing is really about understanding how different types of marks communicate different things.

The watercolor wash establishes the atmosphere first. The soft blue sky fading into green ground creates separation before the pen even touches the page.

Then the linework takes over.

The clouds are built from large rounded forms moving diagonally through the composition to create movement. The cypress trees act as vertical accents against the softer landscape shapes.

The hatching is where the drawing really starts describing form.

Evenly spaced diagonal lines create organized shading in the plant life, while more broken and irregular marks make the ground feel rough, slanted, and uneven.

That’s an important shift in thinking:
Lines are not just for darkening areas. They explain the surface, direction, and texture of what you’re drawing.

Once you understand that, your drawings start feeling much more dimensional even with very simple materials.
