She Chose a Vacation Over Her Child’s Life. #shorts

In June 2023, 32‑year‑old Kristel Candelario of Cleveland, Ohio left her 16‑month‑old daughter, Jailyn, alone at home while she went on a vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico. She departed on June 6 and returned on June 16, leaving Jailyn confined in a playpen at their residence near

Lorain Avenue and West 97th Street.
When Candelario returned, she found Jailyn unresponsive and called 911. Responders pronounced the toddler dead. Investigators noted the playpen was lined with urine- and feces-soiled blankets, and Jailyn suffered severe dehydration and starvation. An autopsy confirmed her death resulted from prolonged lack of food and water.

Candelario was charged with aggravated murder and child endangerment, among other counts. In February 2024, she pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and child endangerment in a plea deal; other charges were dismissed.

In March 2024, Judge Brendan Sheehan sentenced her to life in prison without parole, calling her actions “the ultimate act of betrayal.” Her defense cited mental health struggles, including depression, but the court emphasized that nothing justified leaving Jailyn alone to suffer and die.
