Israeli Strikes Kill at Least 17 in Gaza, Ground Troops Expand Operation
In the early hours of Friday, Israeli fighter jets bombed a three-story building in Khan Younis, killing over a dozen people and injuring at least 16. The blasts occurred amid a broader Israeli push to claim a “security zone” in northern Gaza. The Israeli military has encouraged residents to evacuate the area, though a UN estimate suggests around 280,000 people have already been displaced. Despite international criticism that Israel’s blockade on humanitarian supplies amounts to collective punishment, officials in Jerusalem maintain enough aid entered Gaza during a six-week lull to meet most immediate needs.
Hamas continues to demand a total withdrawal of Israeli forces and a lasting ceasefire for the release of the roughly 24 remaining hostages believed to be alive. Israel, however, insists the group disarm or leave Gaza, conditions Hamas flatly rejects. With the territory heavily bombed, the conflict has exacted a severe toll—Gaza’s Health Ministry claims more than 50,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, though Israel says a large portion of those were militants. Meanwhile, Israeli forces also said they eliminated a top Hamas commander in Lebanon, highlighting how the conflict has spilled beyond Gaza’s borders. As the fighting intensifies, hopes for a swift resolution continue to dim, and humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain dire. #shorts
